what AI fluency looks like for designers

Over the last few months, Tommy Geoco has went on site to study today’s top design teams (Vercel, Perplexity, Metalab, Ramp, etc.).

So this week’s episode is a deep dive into all of the trends he’s seeing around AI workflows and where design is headed next.

Some highlights:

  • Why 59% of designers build their own tools

  • Tommy’s current tool stack for AI design work

  • What signals show AI fluency in job interviews

  • Why internal tool building is the new career path

  • Why now is the best time to grow in the design community

  • + a lot more

🤝 WITH GRANOLA

As a designer I’m always talking to people… team meetings, design CRIT, user interviews.

So it’s super important to capture the ideas and feedback I’m getting.

That’s why I never ever ever ever have a conversation about design without running Granola in the background.

So when the meeting ends, Granola enhances the notes I’ve written and I can even ask questions or get tailored summaries from the call.

It’s like a super-powered notes app that actually understands your meetings and it has quickly become a staple tool in my design practice.

Every designer should be using this 😎 Get a free month with code DIVECLUB 👇

🔗 FEATURED RESOURCES

How to operate as a staff designer

“Senior designers ship great features. Staff designers help the product make sense as a whole. The real difference isn't seniority… it's the scope and type of impact”

The future of apps

Dan Saffer shares 6 ideas about where the future of app design is headed using Spotify as an example. It will get you thinking for sure :)

Sound design behind-the-scenes

Remember Josh Puckett? His episode made me want to get better at sound design. So I devoured this breakdown from Josh (his sound designer) about how he brought the Interface Craft onboarding to life with audio. It’s so freaking cool.

👥 FEATURED RESOURCE

The loop I can’t stop thinking about…

Lately I’ve been obsessed with productizing this loop:

  1. Share a prototype built with Claude/Codex

  2. Get feedback from stakeholders/users

  3. Convert that feedback into next steps

  4. Send next steps back to your agent

That’s the new focus for Inflight so I silently updated the website as we gear up for an official launch…

Figured you might be interested in a first look before I inevitably change it last minute tonight again :)

🧃 INSPIRATION JUICE

3 things I saved this week

1️⃣ Sticky note mobile app

I’m obsessed with this visual style from Bogdan 🤩

2️⃣ Grid-based website from Hex

Grid websites like the new Unsiloed website are most definitely in right now. This is one of the better ones from Ayush.

3️⃣ Notion honeycomb

Alright this is a bit of a silly one… but I really liked the image Nikhil made to announce he’s joining Notion. I didn’t use to save this kind of stuff but now that I can incorporate it so easily into my own work, the range of what gets included in my taste library has definitely expanded.
