🤿 designing on expert mode

I’m noticing a trend throughout my interviews…

Designers who can code spend more time sketching and less time in Figma 👇

“I spend way more time sketching stuff out on a notebook than I do in Figma. I can make a scribble and skip the Figma stage to jump directly into code”

Julius Tarng

This is already my process for designing websites. Last week I sketched out concepts for the new /ideas page and then built it directly in Framer.

However when it comes to product design, this likely falls outside of your core skillset.

AI will change that.

And when it does, I can’t help but think the current state of Figma will feel like an awkward middle ground. In fact, it’s almost all I can think of since leaving Config.

So I wrote an article explaining why 👇

A QUICK STORY...

I made a bit of a crazy bet back in Nov. 2022.

Even though I was quite proficient in Webflow and had already built a coming soon page for the Dive website… I decided to switch to Framer.

The more I saw people sharing their experiences on Twitter, the more convinced I was that this is what the future of web design looks like.

I’m almost 2 years into that decision and I’m so grateful I made the switch. Framer is so intuitive. It feels familiar to Figma only you can publish your designs with a single click.

So if you’re comfortable in another tool, maybe it’s time to make a bet of your own 👇

📺 THIS WEEK’S EPISODE

Prototyping, interaction design, and learning SwiftUI

Speaking of skipping Figma

This week we get to hear from Gavin Nelson who is currently designing the Linear mobile app. The conversation is a deep dive into prototyping and the intricacies of interaction design:

  • Gavin’s journey learning SwiftUI

  • How Gavin got into designing app icons

  • How to design physics-based interactions

  • What it’s like designing for power users at Linear

  • Why interaction design is so important for mobile apps

  • Why Gavin uses code almost exclusively for prototyping now

  • When it makes sense to prototype at the beginning of your process

  • The interplay between custom and stock components in mobile design

The interaction design bible

In many ways I view interaction design as the pinnacle of craft. It’s kind of like designing on expert mode.

That’s why Linear lists it multiple times in the requirements section for their principal product designer role 👀

If you want to level up your interaction skills then the ultimate resource just dropped: Family Values. It’s a robust breakdown of what made the interactions in the Family mobile app so special (with 50+ visual examples!).

If nothing else it’s phenomenal inspiration so you’ll wanna bookmark it 👇

3 design tips from the new Daylight website

6 months later and the episode with Erik Kennedy is still the #1 most watched 😅

The man is good at breaking down visual design tactics. Simple as that.

For this ~4 min video he walks you through the new Daylight Computer website which is easily one of the best to launch this year.

NEW RELEASE

Introducing the new “ideas” page

The quality of ideas I'm exposed to through these interviews is seriously a career cheat code.

So today I'm launching a new "ideas" page! It's my attempt at connecting the key insights and creating a single home for all of my writing.

Plus we made a prettttty neat launch animation that I think you’ll like (check it out on Twitter or Linkedin).

🤿 Meet the Dive partners

I made a list of my favorite products and asked them to come on as sponsors of the newsletter/podcast. They said yes 🥹
