how designers are building their own tools with AI

There’s a new trend I’m noticing… designers are vibe coding custom tools to create new visual effects or speed up existing workflows.

And it’s awesome 💥

A few weeks ago Nick Pattison showed us how he builds pattern tools in Lovable. And today we get to hear from Ryan Miyoshi about how he creates custom tools for his work as the Head of Design at Column.

We get a behind-the-scenes of 4 different tools:

  • 2 for creating custom image effects

  • 1 for generating branded charts

  • 1 node-based workflow for creating customer posters

But even more important than the specific tools is Ryan’s mentality. If you have his level of agency and determination then AI gives you superpowers 💪

🤝 WITH GRANOLA

So Granola just launched a new featured called Recipes and I already can’t imagine life without it.

It’s a simple way to run advanced prompts across all of the context of your Granola notes. And they have some pretty great defaults out of the box too!

You can even use the prompt that I made for Inflight called “Gather product feedback” which looks at all of my user interviews and pulls out product-related feedback with clear, actionable themes and even direct quotes.

I use it all the time and it’s another reason why I’m completely obsessed with Granola. If you haven’t tried it yet they’re offering 3 months free for you and anyone on your team 👇

Slots in Figma design systems

If you’ve followed me for a long time you might remember how nerdy I used to get on Twitter about hacking slots in Figma.

Well those days are officially over 🙌

Because Figma released native slot components at their Schema conference. If you’re interested in a deep dive Nathan Curtis did a great write up here 👇

Where’s the AI design renaissance?

It’s important (and difficult) not to get swept up in all the AI hype. So I want to share a more nuanced take from my friend Erik Kennedy.

It’s a thorough overview of the state of the industry along with some recommendations to help designers navigate it all.

This is the article that actually spawned my thinking around how AI’s impact on designers is more about scope than speed 👇

Button tutorial from Derek Briggs

This is an oldie but a goodie. I highly recommend bookmarking this thread from Derek because it’s insanely valuable when working on components (especially in code).

Over the weekend I literally took this thread and fed it into Claude Code to proofread my button components 😄

🧃 INSPIRATION JUICE

3 things I saved this week

1️⃣ Luma Settings UI

I think I’ve said this before but it’s worth repeating: Luma is one of the most underrated design teams out there. Every page is gorgeous—even this settings view which I saved recently.

2️⃣ Bringing placeholder avatars to life

This is probably the coolest thing I’ve seen on design Twitter in the last month 😮

Shoutout Hugo for the find (he also just joined as the founding design engineer at Paper!)

3️⃣ Pressed tab state

Speaking of component details…

I thought this pressed tab state from Marcel was a pretty nice touch 👌

How much did you enjoy this issue?
