🤿 my take-home exercise

how to get hired by the best design teams 👀

What are the best teams looking for in design candidates?

That’s become one of my favorite questions to ask so this episode shines a light on some of those traits and what you can do to stand out.

It includes insights from:

🤝 WITH DESSN

There’s a lot of talk on this show about quality and velocity… and the biggest hack I’ve seen is having designers who can ship directly to production.

Now Dessn is making it so that designers everywhere can do just that without having to write any code.

Everyone is talking about how LLMs can 10x developers… but Dessn is laser focused on how LLMs can 10x designers.

It’s one of the tools I’m most excited about right now and they’re giving early access to the Dive community 👇

🔗 FEATURED RESOURCE

Behind-the-scenes of my Maven take home exercise

Last week I shared the email I wrote to sell myself while in the Maven interview process and it really seemed to resonate so I want to take it a step further…

Today I'm sharing the Loom video and Figma file that I submitted a few years ago for my take-home exercise. It’s all about designing a better breakout room experience for a live Zoom class.

Obviously I had no idea I’d wind up sharing this when I filmed it so it’s about as raw as it gets but I hope it helps :)

🔗 FEATURED RESOURCE

Example of using video in your portfolio

I still think video is an underrated tactic for sharing your work on a portfolio website.

So I'm always on the look for examples of designers who are doing it at a high level, which is why today I want to share Patrick Morgan's portfolio.

🧃 INSPIRATION JUICE

3 things I saved this week

1️⃣ Pricing labels on hover

This is the first time I've seen an effect like this, and it's definitely something that I'm going to look to add the next time I work on a pricing section.

2️⃣ Glitch art direction

I like saving effects where the execution is incredibly simple and the novelty comes from the art direction itself.

3️⃣ Nice integration layout

I've designed so many integration sections for websites over the last 10 years and sometimes it's hard to have a fresh take but I think Ghost does something pretty unique here.
