+ why it's important to overshoot the opportunity

I’m doing something a bit different for this week’s episode…
Remember James McDonald? He’s one of my favorite visual designers on the planet (just take a look at his feed).
Anyway… I asked him if he wanted to jam with me on the Inflight UI and he agreed!

⏰ He’s spent the last few days riffing on my ideas and he’s going to share some concepts with me on a live stream today at 10amEST ⏰
It should be fun so I hope to see you there!
🤝 WITH GENWAY
Alright here’s the thing… you don’t need another dashboard. What you need to do is to talk to customers 👀
So I want to introduce you to Genway AI

You can think of it like vibe researching to validate your ideas quickly.
Just draft your questions, select an ICP, and their AI agent runs interviews on your behalf by pulling from a panel of global participants.
Set it up in the morning and get actionable insights by lunch time.
It’s validation at your fingertips and you can try it out free for 14 days just click the link below👇
🔗 FEATURED RESOURCE
Usable Google Fonts

Remember Mike Smith from Smith+Diction? He’s top of the game when it comes to brand design.
Anyway… a few months ago I asked for his opinion on the Inflight brand and he shared a Figma file with all of the “usable” Google fonts he’s organized.
It’s incredible.
And now it’s available for anybody to use.
I know I say “you’re going to want to bookmark this” often but seriously… you’re going to want to bookmark this 👇
🔗 FEATURED RESOURCE
Shopify Chief Design Officer’s message to the team

If you want a TLDR of where the design industry is headed this ~7 min video is about as good as it gets.
Some highlights:
He’s asking Shopify designers to stop “hiding work behind presentations and slides”
He wants less context up front (”users don’t get the benefit of a pre-read”)
He wants design to “overshoot the opportunity” (not try to one-shot the right scope)
I love #3 and am guilty of trying to find the “highest ROI solution” vs. spending time focusing on the “best possible” solution.
🔗 FEATURED RESOURCE
When AI has better taste than you
I’m just as tired of hearing about “taste” as you are, but Julie Zhou offers a fresh take in this article that I don’t see shared enough.
“at the highest echelons, taste is not just prediction, it’s also movement making. The most significant tastemakers take social risks. They might champion work that others find unfamiliar and stake their reputation on bold judgments that initially seem out of touch”

That dimension of taste is most defensible against AI (whereas most references of “good taste” simply imply that the majority of people would agree that something is “good”).
You might’ve heard me refer to this as “strategic taste” on a few of the most recent episodes.
Per usual though, Julie has the ability to articulate ideas with a clarity I aspire to :)

4 things I saved this week
1️⃣ Indented logo concepts from Oguz
I’m a sucker for designs that make you feel like an underlying layer is exposed. This is flawless execution from one of the best visual designers on the planet 👌
2️⃣ Table filter interaction

Speaking of great visual designers…
Check out this table concept from James McDonald 👀
I particularly like the two-pane filter pattern. Not sure I’ve seen an implementation like that before.
⭐ P.S. don’t forget I’m jamming with James on some of the new Inflight dashboard designs. We’re doing a live stream today if you want a peak behind the curtain. I’ll drop the link on Twitter and Linkedin shortly.
3️⃣ The new Flow website

The new Flow website is ridiculously fun.
Love the way they nod back to the trailing text motif
Moving in and out of light mode/dark mode adds energy
The color palette is very unique
4️⃣ Bonus inspiration

I’ve been using Chronicle a lot lately for design inspiration and I just did a breakdown of all of my favorite design details from their new site.
How much did you enjoy this issue?Never hesitate to reply with feedback too :) |
