𤿠doing it live
+ why it's important to overshoot the opportunity

Iām doing something a bit different for this weekās episodeā¦
Remember James McDonald? Heās one of my favorite visual designers on the planet (just take a look at his feed).
Anyway⦠I asked him if he wanted to jam with me on the Inflight UI and he agreed!

ā° Heās spent the last few days riffing on my ideas and heās going to share some concepts with me on a live stream today at 10amEST ā°
It should be fun so I hope to see you there!

š FEATURED RESOURCE
Usable Google Fonts

Remember Mike Smith from Smith+Diction? Heās top of the game when it comes to brand design.
Anyway⦠a few months ago I asked for his opinion on the Inflight brand and he shared a Figma file with all of the āusableā Google fonts heās organized.
Itās incredible.
And now itās available for anybody to use.
I know I say āyouāre going to want to bookmark thisā often but seriously⦠youāre going to want to bookmark this š
š FEATURED RESOURCE
Shopify Chief Design Officerās message to the team

If you want a TLDR of where the design industry is headed this ~7 min video is about as good as it gets.
Some highlights:
Heās asking Shopify designers to stop āhiding work behind presentations and slidesā
He wants less context up front (āusers donāt get the benefit of a pre-readā)
He wants design to āovershoot the opportunityā (not try to one-shot the right scope)
I love #3 and am guilty of trying to find the āhighest ROI solutionā vs. spending time focusing on the ābest possibleā solution.
š FEATURED RESOURCE
When AI has better taste than you
Iām just as tired of hearing about ātasteā as you are, but Julie Zhou offers a fresh take in this article that I donāt see shared enough.
āat the highest echelons, taste is not just prediction, itās also movement making. The most significant tastemakers take social risks. They might champion work that others find unfamiliar and stake their reputation on bold judgments that initially seem out of touchā

That dimension of taste is most defensible against AI (whereas most references of āgood tasteā simply imply that the majority of people would agree that something is āgoodā).
You mightāve heard me refer to this as āstrategic tasteā on a few of the most recent episodes.
Per usual though, Julie has the ability to articulate ideas with a clarity I aspire to :)
š§ INSPIRATION JUICE
4 things I saved this week
1ļøā£ Indented logo concepts from Oguz
Iām a sucker for designs that make you feel like an underlying layer is exposed. This is flawless execution from one of the best visual designers on the planet š
Check it out ā
2ļøā£ Table filter interaction

Speaking of great visual designersā¦
Check out this table concept from James McDonald š
I particularly like the two-pane filter pattern. Not sure Iāve seen an implementation like that before.
See it live ā
ā P.S. donāt forget Iām jamming with James on some of the new Inflight dashboard designs. Weāre doing a live stream today if you want a peak behind the curtain. Iāll drop the link on Twitter and Linkedin shortly.
3ļøā£ The new Flow website

The new Flow website is ridiculously fun.
Love the way they nod back to the trailing text motif
Moving in and out of light mode/dark mode adds energy
The color palette is very unique
Check it out ā
4ļøā£ Bonus inspiration

Iāve been using Chronicle a lot lately for design inspiration and I just did a breakdown of all of my favorite design details from their new site.
How much did you enjoy this issue?Never hesitate to reply with feedback too :) |
