🤿 6 portfolio tips

+ the keys to persuasive storytelling

I’ve interviewed a lot of designers who have landed some pretty high profile roles and I’m starting to notice some trends 👀

So this video breaks down 6 portfolio tips that you can use to stand out 👇

🤝 WITH MOBBIN

I’ve been designing for a long time but somehow I only signed up for Mobbin this year and I cannot believe it took me this long.

It’s a total cheat code being able to find inspiration for basically any pattern, any product, any flow…

It’s fast. It’s beautiful. And I already cannot imagine designing without Mobbin.

It’s the first place I look at for inspiration 💡

How I use Visual Electric for Dive Club

At this point I don’t know how I would live without Visual Electric. I use it for everything including all of my imagery for Dive Club.

As a result a lot of people have been asking about my workflow so I finally made a walkthrough video :)

How to vectorize the art you’re generating with AI

Now that it’s easy to create anything you can imagine, the next step is knowing how to vectorize your creations so that they are editable in Figma.

Brett from Designjoy just shared the tool he uses so I wanted to highlight it for you.

3 tips for persuasive storytelling

This ~8 min video from Scott Berkun is super practical and made specifically for designers who want to get better at persuading people with storytelling.

The three main lessons are:

  1. Study the audience for your story first (The Who)

  2. Establish clear and concise stakes (What happens if they ignore your ideas?)

  3. Be curious about how salespeople and advertisers do #1 and #2

We often think of the main character in a story as the user. But in reality the main character is the person you’re talking to… and that’s why #2 is often overlooked 👀

P.s. I’m working on some more storytelling episodes after all the positive feedback on my convo with Ellis Hamburger

3 things I saved this week

1️⃣ Sticky features tab

I really like the new Folk website but the specific part I want to share is this sticky features tab section.

It’s a concept you’ve seen many times but the execution here is top notch. Also those colors 😍

2️⃣ Restream dashboard

Every day someone copies a design detail from a James McDonald web design.

But take a second to study the visual details in this dashboard UI…

It’s simple but highly intentional. Just look at the different types of dividing lines for instance 👀

3️⃣ Nested settings nav

Tbh I’m not sure what this product is but I saved the design anyway because it’s phenomenal dashboard UI.

A few details I enjoy:

  • The tilted 3D icons and circle backgrounds

  • How Farrel styled the nested subnav

  • The detail on the plugin icon container

How much did you enjoy this issue?

Never hesitate to reply with feedback too :)
