BTS of the craziest website of 2025

2 weeks ago Cory Watilo absolutely broke social media with the release of the new Posthog website.

I’ve looked at a lot of web pages in my career but I have to admit… I’ve never seen anything like this before 👀

Every single time I open up the site I find something new.

So this episode is a behind-the-scenes with Cory.

He walks us through his creative process (hint: a lot of Balsamiq 👀) and his vision to bring personality back to web design.

🤝 WITH MOBBIN

By now you probably know Mobbin is my absolute go to for product design inspiration 🚀

But they just took their product to the next level by introducing Mobbin sites

Now they’re also the first place to look for inspiration when designing landing pages, agency portfolios, online storefronts, and a lot more…

I use Mobbin almost every single day and can’t recommend the product enough.

🔗 FEATURED RESOURCE

Storytelling in web design

Rob Hope shared a pretty epic ~4 minute video breaking down the 5 storytelling tactics that makes for a great website using McLaren and Dropbox Dash’s collab as an example.

🔗 FEATURED RESOURCE

Background patterns for your next web design project

Staying with the theme here…

I recently saved this website which is a directory of professional-grade background patterns and gradients. You can easily copy the code and seamlessly integrate it into your next project.

Some of the grid patterns are pretty neat so it’s a good bookmark 👇

🔗 FEATURED RESOURCE

The great differentiation

I’ve been looking for an excuse to share this article by Packy McCormick for a while now. The cause for the delay is it’s really not a design resource.

But I think it perfectly encapsulates why the Posthog website worked so well.

“I don’t want the world to gradient descend into bland uniformity, and it was starting to feel like it might. For most people and companies, it’s just easier to copy what seems to be working with as little effort as possible.

That disease, however, contains the instructions for its cure. When they go cheap, go costly. When they go same, go different.”

Packy McCormick

AI is an infinite copy machine. It’s never been more important for design to differentiate.

🧃 INSPIRATION JUICE

3 things I saved this week

1️⃣ Play bar details

I spent way too long staring at the shadow/gradient details on this play button from James McDonald.

Just incredible work.

2️⃣ Empty State / Toast pattern

It took me a while to figure out why I liked this component so much. On the surface it’s quite simple. Nice contrast, solid typography, etc. But then I realized why I felt compelled to save it…

The duotone nature of the icon works really well here. Simply making the bottom half of the icon lower contrast turns this from “solid” into “ya I might copy that”.

3️⃣ Bible verse composition

I would never publicly admit how much design inspiration I steal from the Bible app’s verse of the day lol.

They have no right going as hard as they do.

I thought this composition in particular was impressive. The typography combo is fresh. But the real detail I love is the way they sliced up this image and strategically broke the frame with the person. You could make an entire website around this motif and it would be 🔥

How much did you enjoy this issue?
