🤿 storytelling at Linear

+ your invite to the new Dive community

We're going to step out of the pixels for this week’s episode and focus more on how you can get people excited about what you're designing.

Because in the age of AI, stories are one of the main things that make your product defensible.

So I interviewed Julian Lehr who is the storytelling lead at Linear.

We go deep into his creative process and how he kinda thinks of his role kind of like packaging design in a way…

Some highlights:

  • Julian’s sources of inspiration

  • Understanding Julian’s creative process

  • The new analogy that Julian is working on for Linear

  • Linear’s strategy for storytelling for their ā€œAgentsā€ release

  • The importance of visual design in copywriting and marketing

  • How Linear’s in-house creative studio collaborates on storytelling

  • + a lot more

šŸ¤ WITH MOBBIN

There legitimately might not be a tool that the design industry agrees on more than Mobbin…

Over 1 million designers from companies like Airbnb, Uber, Headspace all use Mobbin for design inspiration

And it makes sense…

It’s one of the highest ROI investments you can possibly make as a designer

I use Mobbin almost every day to see real world examples of how different products handle specific UI patterns and flows

It’s invaluable to my practice and I can’t recommend the product enoughšŸ‘‡

šŸ”— FEATURED RESOURCE

Join the Dive Club Talent Network

When I first started Dive, getting talented designers hired was core to the mission.

So I found a new product partner to help me execute on that goal again.

If you’re open to new opportunities, take a second to claim a spot in the new talent network.

I’ll be pointing hand-vetted companies your way and hopefully getting people into some epic new roles soon šŸ’Ŗ

On that note, if you’re hiring you can sign up here to access the network.

šŸ”— FEATURED RESOURCE

Wanna hang with me and other listeners?

Remember that survey I sent out a month ago?

Well, I received a lot of responses from you all and the common theme is that designers want a low-pressure place to chat and learn from each other, so…

We are finally kicking off the Dive Community šŸ«‚

Tbh I don’t know what it will become. This isn’t going to be a formal thing… just an open space to share ideas, ask questions, or riff on anything really.

🧃 INSPIRATION JUICE

3 things I saved this week

1ļøāƒ£ Fun shadow compositions

This entire Fray website is well-executed but I particularly like the use of diagonal lines as a motif šŸ‘€

Although next week’s episode with Ryo Lu from Cursor would suggest that the Cursor for X is probably just Cursor :)

2ļøāƒ£ Particle’s random avatar

I’ve been taking a lot of inspiration from a news app called Particle. One thing they do is create an array of artistic avatars that you can randomly select from in onboarding.

What was once a low ROI art project now feels like it should be table stakes in most apps. It’s an easy way to protect against empty states while injecting more of the product’s visual identity. Win win.

3ļøāƒ£ Containers breaking the section frame

I really like how Daryl uses the cards to tie together these two sections (and the circles behind add depth).

You could take this pattern in a lot of different directions for your next website āœŒļø

How much did you enjoy this issue?

Never hesitate to reply with feedback too :)

Meet the Dive partners

I made a list of my favorite products and asked them to come on as sponsors of the newsletter/podcast. They said yes 🄹
