🤿 the master storyteller

how designers become more effective writers

What do Raycast, Daylight, Amo, Amie, The Browser Co, and Mainframe all have in common?

They all hired Ellis Hamburger for storytelling.

So this week’s episode is a bit different...

We're going to get away from the pixels and go deep into how you can use language to tell a compelling story about your product.

Because I believe storytelling will be one of the most important skillsets for designers moving forward.

So here are a few practical takeaways I saved from this episode 👇

  1. Ideas are more viral than products (so lead with story over features)

  2. Keep asking “why does this matter?” to push past surface-level benefits like “faster” and “better” to find true meaning

  3. Frame solutions as “we are the best way to ______ so that you can _____ (that 2nd blank is the important one)

  4. Think of product onboarding like a movie trailer that primes people for the experience ahead (Ellis references Arc, 222 and Dispo as examples)

  5. Ellis uses headlines to ask questions and make people think. Subheads provide clear answers.

There’s a lot more in the full conversation including:

  • How to tell a story that people care about

  • Lessons from the Language team at Snapchat

  • Breaking down specific copywriting strategies

  • What we can learn from the CEOs of Snapchat vs. Browser Co. (I thought this part was particularly insightful)

🤝 WITH VISUAL ELECTRIC

One of my favorite parts of the recent episode with Smith & Diction was hearing about Mike’s experience generating brand imagery using Visual Electric.

“I was already in visual electric because it looks like Figma. It feels like Figma. It operates like Figma. And that to me, I was just like, I was comfortable. I felt like I can move around in here with confidence”

Mike Smith

I think that’s exactly why I love the product so much too. Visual Electric is so clearly built specifically for designers.

So this is a reminder that you can get your first month for free with the code DIVECLUB 👇
