+ how AI is changing design workflows

I’ve been in a lot of videos on the internet over the past few years…

But this one feels the most me…

Tommy Geoco and his crew basically lived at my place for three days, capturing every corner of my life (including an Inflight jam session with my cofounder, Kyle Barber, who flew in just for it).

I hope you enjoy it 👇

⭐️ KEY RESOURCE

Recording: How AI is Changing Design Workflows

ICYMI a couple of days ago I led a panel all about how AI is shifting design workflows and Nick, Pranathi, and Henry were dropping knowledge bombs left and right.

Two ideas that really stuck with me:

1 — Nick is building internal tools at Primary Studio to power his brand sprints

By day ~3 of the brand sprint, Nick has started building tools in Lovable that clients can use to explore potential brand directions and patterns.

Fiddling with sliders makes it easier for them to articulate what they want. And this tool then becomes an artifact in the handoff process 🤯

Josh Puckett then shared an interesting perspective about it on Twitter:

“At Dropbox, we made dozens of these little tools for our photo app, Carousel, everything from core interactions down to the smallest details like the specific tint and design for our overflow thumbnails.”

Josh Puckett

But now with AI and tools like Lovable Nick can create tools like this weekly for every new project which is a big deal.

My gut is this trend only increases as meta prototyping becomes more accessible 📈

(also if you want to learn about Nick’s process we filmed an episode about his brand sprint model)

2 — When Pranathi uses v0 vs. Claude Code

Remember Pranathi Peri from her episode about designing v0?

I figured she’d be the perfect person to answer the question: when Figma vs. v0 vs. Claude Code.

Here’s my takeaway:

  • Figma is still the best for messy exploration when things are unshaped

  • AI prototyping tools are great for smaller, more tactical prototypes to explore ideas or build an interaction as a part of the handoff process. They are not great for prototyping entire flows that mirror production (in fact I’d say this is a major trap and waste of time).

  • She’s quick to jump into Claude Code anytime she wants to tweak or build off of what is in production (sounds like most of her time is spent here)

🤝 WITH PAPER

I saw a scroll-stopping tweet the other day…

The creators of tailwind are working directly on Paper to train the output to be perfect

They even invested in the company 🤯

So just think about the possibilities for a second…

In the future you could design something in Paper and then just right-click and copy the perfect Tailwind as if the creators wrote it by hand.

Or take an existing code component and import it into Paper to make edits directly on the canvas.

This is going to totally change how we design and deliver UIs for the web and it’s another reason why I’m betting on Paper as the next great design tool.

Auto layout tips from the Figma 🐐

The more I use AI to prototype the more clear it is that auto layout is important. Like… really important.

If you’re slinging rectangles and grouping things you’re going to have a bad time in tools like Figma Make.

So I asked the 🐐 Joey Banks to share a free lesson from his top-rated course Level Up with Figma to help you get the most out of auto layout 👇

3 things I saved this week

1️⃣ Wabi’s progress list

Wabi has been all over Twitter lately (I’m going to do my best to record an episode when the time is right).

A few days ago Soleio shared a screenshot and this progress list caught my eye. It’s simple but the indentation on the containers is a nice touch 👌

2️⃣ White icon empty state

There’s a reason I asked James for help with empty states during our live design session

He’s top of the game. And this icon style here is my latest obsession

I’m not sure I’ve seen something quite like this before 👀 So simple and yet so fresh

3️⃣ WealthSimple buttons

I cannot wait for the quality of design that’s about to come out of WealthSimple post Fey acquisition.

Thiago Costa is as good as it gets.

And I spent way too long admiring the details on these buttons 🤌
