🤿 vitamins > painkillers

Everyone will tell you to design a product that’s a “painkiller” not a “vitamin”.

And on the surface it makes sense… painkillers demand attention and people are more willing to pay for them.

But Valerie Tetu (one of my favorite product/design thinkers today) shared a take that changed my mind.

It’s a call to move from “problem-focused” to “benefit-focused” design, and I find it quite compelling for today’s world.

That’s why her article is this week’s featured idea 👇

Friends don’t let friends use Figma’s native file search (I haven’t in over a year 😬)

Because Raycast’s Figma file search extension is 10x faster. I even have it wired up to a hotkey ( opt + f ) so I can quickly access all of my Figma files from anywhere.

It’s just another example of how Raycast is my shortcut to everything on my computer. I can’t recommend it enough for designers 👇

A better way to design mobile apps

Remember last week how Gavin Nelson talked about the power of SwiftUI for prototyping the Linear mobile app?

That’s because in order to unlock the skill of interaction design you have to work directly with the materials. The good news though is that there’s another way that doesn’t involve code…

Play is a new tool that lets you design and prototype mobile apps using native iOS materials.

As soon as I saw this app clip of Jordan’s interaction I knew it was a big deal and that I had to interview their co-founder Dan LaCivita to learn more.

This is that episode ✌️

It’s a deep dive into Play’s product strategy, the power of interaction design, and a glimpse at where design tools are headed.

The cost of craft

I recently went through this article again while preparing for an upcoming interview with George Kedenburg and wanted to share it with you because I forgot how good it is.

  1. He perfectly captures what made the Instagram design culture in ~2018 so special

  2. He breaks down the exact reasons why the cost of craft becomes more expensive at scale

  3. And he shares specific tactics that ICs and leaders can use to foster a culture of intentional quality

This is one of those articles you could read once a year 👇

Get the source files behind this viral animation

Filip Legierski is one of the most underrated designers on the planet right now. Everything he shares on Twitter is gold 💯

As soon as I saw this animation go viral I DM’d him asking if he’d be willing to share the source file with the Dive community.

He agreed!

I made a list of my favorite products and asked them to come on as sponsors of the newsletter/podcast. They said yes 🥹
