why Molly studio was acquired by Shopify

Remember when the Carl Rivera told us about his vision to create the new Shopify Product Design Studio?
Well, in this episode I got to sit down with Marvin Schwaibold from Molly studio who Shopify recently acquired to bring that vision to life. I genuinely think he’s one of the most creative people I’ve ever met.
Some highlights:
How to become a well of creative ideas
How AI unlocks how designers work at Shopify
What design differentiation looks like at Shopify
What Marvin has learned diving into Claude Code
How designers at Shopify create and leverage internal tools
Behind-the-scenes of redesigning the famous Collins website
+ a lot more
👥 FEATURED RESOURCE
Want to become a founding designer?

You guys… the talent network is really starting to pick up steam and I’m having so much fun helping people land roles at my favorite companies (stories coming soon).
But the role I care most about is the founding designer.
IMO it’s the single most important job in all of tech (ok maybe other than the people building the models themselves but you get the point).
Anyway… some of my favorite startups in the world are hiring right now (Wabi, Simile, Delphi, etc.) and I’d love to promote you to them :)

🔗 FEATURED RESOURCES
Tinder for design taste
![]() | Dan made a pretty genius internal tool for client work that shows 26 logos in the client's selected industry, and they swipe on the ones they hate or love. “The point is to make the love/hate exploration automatic and fun.” |
Fidelity: the missing concept in AI design
![]() | Kevin Grajeda (design engineer at Dessn) wrote an article that got me thinking: We often define fidelity as visual polish. But in an AI prototyping world it’s more accurate to define it as the level of adherence to the system (both design system in the traditional sense but also the encoded tribal knowledge your team builds up over time). |
Linear CEO’s thoughts on malleable software
![]() | We talk a lot about malleable software on this show (see Geoffrey Litt and Tyler Angert) But Karri took the opposite stance in a recent article that I found interesting enough to share 👇 |
🧃 INSPIRATION JUICE
3 things I saved this week
1️⃣ Photo grid concept
Benten is one of my favorite designers and this grid had me staring for way too long.

2️⃣ Masking a key word
I love this H1 implementation on Warp.co 🔥 Definitely got my mind running

3️⃣ Amie breadcrumb interaction
Little design details like this breadcrumb interaction are the reason I still use Amie every day for my calendar/todos.
